Def Leppard

Fifty years after a bunch of Sheffield teenagers started making noise, Def Leppard is still pouring sugar on arenas around the world. Huge harmonies, layered guitars and choruses built for 20,000 voices: that’s the Leppard sound, and it’s all over Rock ‘n’ Roll Radio.

Station picks: the Def Leppard songs to start with

Our five essentials:

1. Pour Some Sugar on Me (1987). The stomp, the chant, the singalong that took over the world.
2. Photograph (1983). The Pyromania breakout and still a perfect rock single.
3. Hysteria (1987). Shimmering, romantic and impossibly polished.
4. Rock of Ages (1983). That nonsense-word intro and a riff built to open shows.
5. Love Bites (1988). Their only No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Three deep cuts worth your time:

1. Wasted (1980). Raw, fast and pure new wave of British heavy metal from On Through the Night.
2. Billy’s Got a Gun (1983). The dark, cinematic closer of Pyromania.
3. Gods of War (1987). Six-plus minutes of drama hiding on Hysteria.
