Styx

Come sail away with one of America’s great arena-rock bands. Styx brought prog ambition, sky-high harmonies and riffs you can hum, and five decades later they’re still on the road and all over Rock ‘n’ Roll Radio.

Station picks: the Styx songs to start with

Our five essentials:

1. Come Sail Away (1977). The piano intro, the build and that unforgettable launch.
2. Renegade (1978). A cappella, then thunder. Stadium crowds still lose it.
3. Blue Collar Man (Long Nights) (1978). A working-class anthem with a killer organ riff.
4. Too Much Time on My Hands (1981). Tommy Shaw’s restless, catchy hit from Paradise Theatre.
5. Lady (1973). The early breakthrough that put Styx on the map.

Three deep cuts worth your time:

1. Suite Madame Blue (1975). A six-minute prog-rock epic from Equinox.
2. Crystal Ball (1976). Tommy Shaw’s acoustic-to-electric showcase.
3. Queen of Spades (1978). Dark, dramatic and heavy from Pieces of Eight.
